The Day the Earth Stood Still

The Day the Earth Stood Still, now showing in cinemas, is a 2008 remake of the 1951 film (trailer above) of the same name. Starring Keanu Reeves as the humanoid alien Klaatu, the film updates Cold War themes like nuclear warfare to the more contemporary issue of man's environmental damage to the planet. I've watched it recently and the only thing about the movie that impressed me greatly was Keanu's ability to speak Chinese. They should give him an Oscar for that! The movie is above average and it starts out with plenty of promise but fails to deliver. In the end, it just falls flat. For those of you who are going to watch it, I recommend watching the 1951 version first. You can watch the entire movie here. So which one do you prefer? The original or the remake?

His Chinese was not spectacular but passable for a white dude.

The ending of the original film is better.

So the robot in the 1951 version was so much smaller than the one in the 2008 version which is giant in comparison.

Storywise, I prefer the original... effects wise that would have to be the new version.

The only reason why it's a Hollywood blockbuster is because of Keanu Reeevs and Jen Connolly.

It is not that bad. I still prefer the Keanu version because it's Keanu!

They should include the Klatu speech scene at the end of the movie.
