Evolution of a Giant Sunspot: Timelapse of Sunspot AR 1944
A large, complex sunspot group designated Active Region 1944 made its appearance on the sun on Jan 1 2014. One of the largest sunspot groups in the last nine years, sunspot AR 1944 is roughly 100,000 miles across. Seven Earths can fit across it!
I took images taken by SDO/HMI from Jan 2 to Jan 13 to create this daily timelapse that shows the movement of the sunspot across the sun and also a close-up to show the evolution of the sunspot.
