I wish all of you a Happy 2008!

This is my last post of the year. How time flies aye. I would like to wish all my friends, readers, fellow bloggers and everyone a Happy New Year and to those who are going out to celebrate the start of the new year later tonight, remember to party hard (video above, hehehe)! See you people in 2008. Cheers!

MIT's Live Action Anime

The folks at MIT Dance Theater Ensemble recently did a live anime show called Madness at Mokuba. This original theatrical production features giant robots, a Japanese schoolgirl, a lovelorn otaku, a masterless samurai, a female gamer, evil media magnates and a vengeful deathgod. Watch it here (in four parts).

Dude sun tanning at HDB carpark

Wanna get a tan but the beach or the swimming pool is too far away for you? Why not just head to your nearest HDB carpark like what this crazy guy did. Hopefully this doesn't become a trend in Singapore or the authorities have to start putting up "No Sun Tanning" sign at all carparks.

(Thanks Mr Big)

Game Boy Around The World

Boy takes a photo of himself playing his Nintendo Game Boy at famous places around the world. Brilliant photoset, I must say but shouldn't he be admiring those beautiful places instead of playing Game Boy? Ha! I think we should invite him to Singapore and ask him to pose in front of the Merlion.

Claudine Hellmuth's Mixed Media Collages

The beautiful Claudine Hellmuth creates cute mixed media collages that incorporate paper, paint, fabric, pen and photocopies. Besides using her own photos for her collages, she also makes her own photo heads by combining 3 or 4 photo images together. And at a price, she can create a personalized, original artwork exclusively for you using photos of your favorite friends, family members, etc. Here's her blog.

Street Fighter III Character Moves

I think fans of Street Fighter III will love this cool website. It has animations of all the various moves of the characters in the game. I really love the interface of the site. It's like playing Street Fighter. Just select the character and then you can click on all the "non-attacks" and "attacks" and see how the character moves.

The most retro PC mod ever

Dude is building a blazing-fast, modern computer into antique fine cabinetry. It is so retro beautiful! He plans on eventually releasing a line of fully themed, matching office suites which would include keyboard, mice, monitors, PC cases, scanners, printers and perhaps even custom office furniture to house them.

Hello Kitty for Men

God no! Hello Kitty will soon be appearing on products targeting young men. From Yahoo News:

"We think Hello Kitty is accepted by young men as a design statement in fashion," he (Sanrio company spokesman) said.

The feline for-men products will go on sale in Japan next month, and will be sold soon in the U.S. and other Asian nations, according to Sanrio.

The usual bubble-headed shape of Hello Kitty was slightly changed for a more rugged, cool look to appeal to men in their teens and early 20s.

..."Young men these days grew up with character goods," said Tohmatsu. "That generation feels no embarrassment about wearing Hello Kitty."
Young men? Hmm. I think he meant to say ONLY young crazy Japanese men.

Singapore Escort Ads on Yellow Pages

According to Gerrie Lim, the author of Invisible Trade, a book about high class sex for sale in Singapore, "people generally have this perception that Singapore is a squeaky clean, prim and proper kind of place so they tend to be very surprised when they find out that there is a thriving escort industry here."

So I flipped the Yellow Pages recently and surprise, surprise, found lots of huge colourful ads by escort agencies here. I took some pics and here they are. Oh boy, the industry is thriving alright.

My new baby has arrived!

P19-12-07_21.59

On Thursday night, the lovely people from LG delivered to me their new 42 inch LCD HD TV as part of their Blogger Review Program. This is my second time doing a blogging assignment for LG. The first was for the beautiful LG Shine mobile phone. That's my new baby (pic above) in its box. I expected it to be big but never thought it would be this big. It's a giant alright. Yesterday evening, one of their guys finally showed up to set it up and briefed me about its features, etc. My first impression: WOW! Will post more pics, videos and reviews later.

Star Trek Bluetooth Communicator

I think this is a great gift for any Trekkie - a Star Trek Bluetooth Communicator, based on the Communicator used in the original series. From eBay:

This Comm will pair with any cell phone that is Bluetooth capable! Once paired you can stick your cell in your pocket then send, receive and make calls using your Comm just like Kirk and the boys! Imagine the response you'll get pulling this bad boy out at the next convention! It even accepts voice commands!

This is a highly modified STTE Comm and is very similar to the Master Replicas, it is nearly identical and is made in China, probably at the same plant the MRs were, with the same molds. In fact, you can interchange most parts between them. The STTE Comms are physically identical to the MR but basically were still just a toy So, Working with a Bluetooth electronics company in China, I got some custom electronics that with some serious mods, I make fit inside and operate with all the Comms original lights and buttons!

Japanese stops humpback whale hunt

I've been complaining to friends and as many people as I can, about the cruelty of the Japanese whale hunts. Japan has been killing whales in the name of science (ya right!) and this year it will kill 1,000 whales including for the first time the humpback whales, but it has surprisingly announced that it will spare the humpbacks. From BBC:

Nobutaka Machimura said the humpback hunt would not go ahead - although the fleet will still hunt about 1,000 other whales in the area.

The BBC's Chris Hogg, in Tokyo, says Japan is now unlikely to chase the humpbacks for at least a year.

The move comes after pressure from the International Whaling Commission (IWC).

Japan is regularly condemned for its annual whaling missions.

But this year's Antarctic expedition was particularly controversial because, in addition to 935 minke whales and 50 fin whales, the fleet intended to kill up to 50 humpbacks.

It was the first time Japan had targeted the humpbacks since a moratorium was introduced in the mid-1960s - when the species had been hunted almost to extinction.
Now if only they stop hunting all types of whales. The killing of endangered intelligent whales is barbaric and inhumane and it must stop.

Laptops designed by kids

The Laptop Club was started by a bunch of 7 to 9 year olds in an after-school program in North Carolina last year. The drawings say a lot about how children think about computers these days and their early adoption of pop-culture.

Teacher locks herself in classroom because of Guns N' Roses song

This is really silly. A teacher in the U.S. who apparently has never listened to the Guns N' Roses classic rock song Welcome To The Jungle, thought that it was a death threat when she heard someone sang it over the school's PA system. She decided to call the police and then locked herself in the classroom. From Blabbermouth:

She was working after hours and thought no one else was in the building. Then she heard someone say over the loudspeaker that she was going to die.

Six troopers and three police dogs showed up and found three teenagers, one of them a custodian at the school, who had been playing with the public address system.

Police say one of them sang "Welcome to the Jungle" into the microphone. The song contains the lyrics "You're in the jungle baby; you're gonna die."
I'm just wondering. Was it the"You're in the jungle baby" or "You're gonna die" part that made her scared enough to call the police? I just can't stop laughing. And it's 6.20am. Time to get back to bed.

Duh! MediaCorp basically owns the airwaves over Singapore. Out of the 19 radio stations operating in Singapore, 13 of them belong to MediaCorp! It doesn't take a genius to come to the conclusion that they dominate the market here.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Year 2007

w000t!!! Online dictionary Merriam-Webster has chosen its Word of the Year for 2007:

w00t: expressing joy (it could be after a triumph, or for no reason at all); similar in use to the word "yay"

... this year's winning word first became popular in competitive online gaming forums as part of what is known as l33t ("leet," or "elite") speak—an esoteric computer hacker language in which numbers and symbols are put together to look like letters. Although the double "o" in the word is usually represented by double zeroes, the exclamation is also known to be an acronym for "we owned the other team"—again stemming from the gaming community.
The top ten words are: w00t, facebook, conundrum, quixotic, blamestorm, sardoodledom, apathetic, Pecksniffian, hypocrite and charlatan. I'm speechless.

Fann Wong shows off boobs at Golden Horse

For those of you who ask "does Fann Wong really have boobs?", here's your answer: she has! Well, at least that's what these pictures of her at the recent Golden Horse Awards show. Yup, thats our Fann Wong in a dress specially made to show off her assets. She looked pretty happy and confident showing them off alright. I may not be a boobs expert but I bet those are surgically enhanced. What do you people think? Real? Fake?

Update: Here's a clip of Fann with boobs and Gurmit Singh with wife on the red carpet.

Playing pool with dominos

There are a lot of domino toppling efforts out there that are always amazing to watch. This one is up there with the best. Domino toppling done on four pool tables! The guy shoots a pool ball and then the dominoes begin to fall one by one and thus pushing the other balls into the various holes of the table. And after the dominoes on one table have all fallen, a ball will then travel on a cue to another table to start a similar chain reaction.

Complete Masters Of The Universe figures for sale!

I go nuts with anything He-Man. So I guess it's not surprising that I went bonkers when I see this awesome collection of vintage Masters Of The Universe figures for sale on eBay. According to the seller, it is the largest mint carded collection containing 71 figures including my favourites He-Man, Prince Adam and Skeletor. From eBay:

Here we go.. up for auction is probably the largest mint on card Masters Of The Universe Collection ever!!! To the best of my knowledge this is a complete set of figures that were released in the United States. Included in this auction are a Spanish carded 8 back Mer-Man, a flat and round back Two-Bad and a blue and red winged Stratos.
To think that I once had all these figures when I was a kid but my parents had to give them away to their friend's kid because they think I was too old to be playing with toys. Damn that kid! Damn him! Now I have to cough up US$7.5k to buy this collection. Thanks a lot mum, dad.

Zouk flyer makes great Christmas gift wrapper

I love receiving Zouk flyers in my mailbox. I've kept most of them. This week's Zouk flyer has a touch of Christmas spirit.

P07-12-07_01.43

Inside the envelope is this huge (poster size) colourful flyer.

P07-12-07_01.45

P07-12-07_01.49

The flyer looks like a Christmas gift wrapper! Turn it around and it lists the upcoming events at Zouk. I thought I give it a try to see if I can use it as a gift wrapper. So I decided to wrap a Batman Of The Future VCD with it.

Tada! The end result...

I love these greeting cards by Loaded Blanks. Each card features an original, full-color comic art by a rising indie comic artist. Just fill up the empty text bubble with your own words and you can bring the card's story (and the occasion) to life. They are great for people like me who hate traditional boring greeting cards.

Pencil Bench

Village Of The Giants: Giant boobies take over a town!

If HG Wells was alive, I think he would never have approved the 1965 movie, Village Of The Giants, which is based loosely on his book, The Food of the Gods and How It Came to Earth. Village Of The Giants is a cult classic about a bunch of teenagers terrorising a town after they became giants thanks to a substance called Goo which they ate. Watch the trailer above. A must watch movie if you love giant boobies and good old 60's special effects.

Finally! Edit your photos on Flickr!

Flickr users can now edit their uploaded pics on Flickr itself, thanks to a collaboration with Picnik. It's about time! From Flickr Blog:

Picnik’s awesome photo editing tools are now only a click away. If you’ve ever wanted to deal with the dreaded red eye or crop a photo just so, click on the new “edit photo” icon located above one of your photos and get started.

We’re thrilled to announce a unique, new partnership with Picnik.

Picnik has been providing online photo editing for a while now. As soon as we saw it, we knew that there was huge potential for us to join together. Rather than Flickr diverting from our speciality to enter a realm we had no (particular) expertise in, the thought of a partnership seemed much more sensible.

The Science of Gift Wrapping

A mathematician in the UK has come up with a formula for the perfect method of gift-wrapping without wasting wrapping paper. From AlphaGalileo:

Bluewater, the UKs leading shopping centre, discovered that Brits continually overestimate the amount of paper they need to wrap their Christmas presents. Following this new revelation, Bluewater today reveals the mathematical solution which will hopefully put an end to unnecessary paper wastage: A1 = 2(ab+ac+bc+c2)**

In laymans’ terms, the length of the wrapping paper should be as long as the perimeter of the side of the gift, with no more than 2cm allowed for an overlap. The width should be just a little over the sum of the width and the depth of the gift.

Those who need to wrap an unusual shaped gift, such as a cylinder, can compare its radius with its height using the formula h/(p-2)***. The equation will help consumers decide whether they should roll the paper around the gift or wrap the paper over the top of it to ensure they reduce their gift-wrapping footprint.

$10 to flag down a cab in Singapore?

They overcharge, speed, drive recklessly, give poor service and now they are calling for a fare hike. And if we let some of them have their way, they would even increase the flag down fare from the current $2.50 to up to $10! Yup. They are the bloody taxi drivers. From AsiaOne:

Some quarters have called for fares to rise substantially to manage demand, so that commuters who need a cab will find it easier to get one.

Cabby Chew Lian Sheng, 37, said that is the 'only way to manage demand', since taxi companies are unable to put more taxis on the road because there are not enough drivers around.

Mr Chew said the flag-down fare should be between $7 and $10. 'There'd be a public outcry. But cabbies can earn a living with fewer trips.'

Mr Chew is also of the view that surcharges must be removed or at least, simplified, as they 'create an artificial market'.

Cabby Manjeet Singh, 62, said the flag-down fare should be $6 or $7. 'It's pathetic now,' he said. 'We should also abolish the surcharges - they are very confusing.'
$6 to $10 just to flag down a cab in Singapore? Are these cabbies mad? Oh wait, maybe they are. Crikey! That's why I don't pity taxi drivers. They are just horrible creatures.

Toilet Head Support System

How to improve your brain power

According to a new book Teach Yourself: Training Your Brain, eating dark chocolate, cheating in school and having plenty of sex will help to make your brain faster, fitter and more productive. From Guardian:

The book details the most up-to-date thinking in science about how diet, the environment, stress and other aspects of modern life affect our mental capacity and distils them in the form of chunks of advice as well as exercises.

It also points out that of the seven different chemical reactions that the brain undergoes in the sexual process, from contemplating intercourse to achieving orgasm, four help the thinking process. The ensuing increase in levels of the 'trust' hormone, oxytocin, for example, increases readiness to think of novel or risky solutions.

Similarly, the post-coital rise in serotonin levels aids both creative thinking and calm, logical decision-making.
Ahh. Now I know why my brain hasn't been up to speed. Note to self: Need more *ahem* to boost brain power.

Andy Huang's Doll Face

Doll Face is an amazing animated short film made by Andy Huang. It's about a machine with a doll face who struggles to construct its own identity. The machine tries to mimic the images shown on a TV screen and unfortunately it self destructs when it isn't satisfied with its final visage. I thought it's a very sad film that mirrors real life where people are often locked in the endless and fruitless pursuit of desire.

James voted off Survivor China

Ok I admit. I'm a closet Survivor fan. Last night's episode of Survivor China was one of the best this season. James, the overwhelming favourite to win this year, was surprisingly voted off!

Before the tribal council, the contestants hatched a plan to blind-sight James into thinking that they are going to vote off Peih-Gee. James had in his possession not one but two immunity idols that would, if he plays them during tribal council, ensure his safety and ultimately a good chance in winning the competition. Well he did not. Call it overconfidence on his part or his inability to figure out that his mates were out to secretly vote him off. He sat there, confident that he would be safe. Oh boy was he wrong.

When the votes were tallied, Jeff called out James' name as the 10th Survivor to be voted off. The contestants including those in the jury were all smiling. I was shouting: Yes!!! James had shock written all over his face. It was unbelievable. What a classic! I'm just loving Survivor every week.

Japanese Power Rangers Spoof

5 Rangers has got to be the funniest thing ever to come out from Japan. It's a series of comedy sketches made for a Japanese TV show that makes fun of the Power Rangers. Each episode revolves around a group of 5 Rangers and their inability to get their costumes right. 5 Rangers is so damn funny that I think I may have burst an artery laughing so hard. Watch all the episodes here.
