Chinese dude wears a pair of Hammer pants (gosh, I haven't seen those in a long time) and dances the entire MC Hammer's "U Can't Touch This" song while his granny is busy sewing him, probably another pair of Hammer pants. Look grandma, I can dance! Gran?
I give this lady the "Wife cum Mother Of The year Award" for making these ultra cool Optimus Prime and Bumblebee Transformers costumes for her husband and son. She used a variety of colourful fabric (polyester ponte, stretchy metallic and headliner foam) to create the soft sculpture like costumes. The Bumblebee one is just truly awesome!

Interesting story about how game designers started the trend of putting bouncing boobies in their games. Boob physics, they call it. From Club Skill:
In the original Dead or Alive it was all a bit crazy. Small movement in the characters resulted in their breasts going all over the place in a 'moon gravity' type of motion. It was and is funny to look at, but at the time, it was the best thing out there. In Dead or Alive 2, or Ultimate for Xbox owners, Team Ninja took the time to make the physics a lot more realistic and slightly toned down. There was an easter egg in the game that manipulated the physics and was controlled with how old the player was, and the same easter egg still works with most Team Ninja games. Dead or Alive 3 improved on 2, but Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball was probably the most sexually oriented title in the series resulting in a boob-fest. Again, Dead or Alive 4 improved slightly but the upcoming Dead or Alive Xtreme 2 seems to do breast physics justice. Unlike most games that have breast physics applied to both breasts at the same time, DoAX2 actually gives each breast its own set of physics resulting in a more natural, and crazy, look.
Here's a video I just took of me playing with the CUBOCC Girl which has got to be one of the creepiest thing on the internet. Doesn't she get giddy? Ha! Btw, that's David Cook's Billie Jean playing on the background.
Don't forget to switch off your lights for an hour tonight starting from 8pm. You will join millions of people from cities across the world in supporting the Earth Hour 2008 campaign by World Wildlife Fund. This will send a powerful global message that collectively, we can take action on global warming.
Just look at what people in Sydney accomplished on 31 March last year. 2.2 million people and 2100 Sydney businesses turned off their lights for one hour. This massive collective effort reduced Sydney’s energy consumption by 10.2% for one hour, which is the equivalent effect of taking 48,000 cars off the road for one hour!
With Sydney icons like the Harbour Bridge and Opera House turning their lights off, and unique events such as weddings by candlelight, the world took notice. Inspired by the collective effort of millions of Sydneysiders, many major global cities are joining Earth Hour in 2008, turning a symbolic event into a global movement.
Earth Hour in Singapore is organised by the Environmental Challenge Organisation and it aims to reach out to individuals, schools and corporates, spreading the word of Earth Hour to all. Currently, there are about 7 grassroots activities to support Earth Hour in Singapore, ranging from stargazing to movie screening. Check out their blog to find out more and take part in the activities that will take place tonight.
Photos of UFO drones have been appearing on various websites and are causing a controversy. They were leaked online by an anonymous source claiming to be involved in a secretive work on extraterrestrial projects. It seems that those "aliens" have definitely upped their UFO designing skills. No more boring flying saucer nowadays. For the UFO drone pictures and information, click here and here.

I've been singing the praises of American Idol contestant David Cook for a long time now and my first reaction watching him perform a different take on Michael Jackson's Billie Jean was "WOW". It totally blew me away. Man, he's a farking genius!
Of course, then I realised that it was actually a cover of a cover done by Chris Cornell, who used to be from Audioslave and Soundgarden.
Here's David's performance on American Idol:
And here's Chris Cornell's performance:
See any similarities? Ok, Ryan Seacrest did mention that David was doing Chris' version of Billie Jean but apparently all the three judges have no clue of the cover done by Chris so they went out praising David for his originality, being brave and for the great arrangement. Tsk. It's Chris Cornell's arrangement guys! Ok but I have to admit I pretty much like David's performance and I hope he wins American Idol because right now I can't stand the cute face of David Archuleta. But Chris Cornell is the REAL genius for his arrangement of the Billie Jean cover. Well, at least now more people will go and buy his CDs.
MTV has a story about David Cook's copying other covers, saying that he is a smart competitor. From MTV:
Michael Slezak, a senior writer for Entertainment Weekly known for his "Idol" coverage, said he thinks Cook is smart for picking the arrangements he has.
"I think it's a little silly to accuse him of stealing arrangements," Slezak explained. "You know, Chris Daughtry took a real hit when he did a version of [Johnny Cash's] 'Walk the Line' and didn't, at any point, credit Live's version, but in this case, Cook put it out there, clearly having Ryan state, 'He's doing Chris Cornell's version,' and if you listen to both versions, it's not like he did a complete carbon copy of Cornell's, anyway.
"I would understand why people would want to see some of these contestants — if they're going to get credit for being brave and innovative — completely change up a song on their own," he continued. "I think it's also hard to ask them to do that. They only have a week to come up with the arrangements, and then they've got to get the 'Idol' band onboard with it and record their version for the iTunes download, so it doesn't give them a lot of time to come up with a completely innovative arrangement of a song every week. Ultimately, I think Cook deserves credit for being smart and aware of new or different versions of songs — different than the ones people are familiar with. I don't know if he should get credit for being brave, but he should get credit for being smart and singing these songs well."
I agree. He is definitely smart enough to fool me initially. Now I can't wait to see what other surprises he has in store for us on his way to his American Idol glory.
Update: If you thought David Cook's performance on American Idol was brilliant, check out his studio recording of Billie Jean here. Ok after listening to this, I think I can safely say David's Billie Jean is way better than Chris Cornell's version or even Michael Jackson's! (Thanks Mr Big)

In what could be the most bizarre marketing strategy ever, the folks at Dr Pepper will be giving a free soda to everyone in America - that's 301,139,947 lucky people - if Axl Rose releases the new Guns N' Roses album Chinese Democracy this year. From the press release:
Tired of a world in which Americans idolize wannabe singers and musicals about high schoolers pass as rock ‘n roll music, Dr Pepper is encouraging (ok, begging) Axl Rose to finally release his 17-year-in-the-making belabored masterpiece, Chinese Democracy, in 2008.
In an unprecedented show of solidarity with Axl, everyone in America, except estranged GNR guitarists Slash and Buckethead, will receive a free can of Dr Pepper if the album ships some time -- anytime! -- in 2008. Dr Pepper supports Axl, and fully understands that sometimes you have to make it through the jungle before you get it right.
"It took a little patience to perfect Dr Pepper’s special mix of 23 ingredients, which our fans have come to know and love,” said Jaxie Alt, director of marketing for Dr Pepper. “So we completely understand and empathize with Axl's quest for perfection – for something more than the average album. We know once it's released, people will refer to it as "Dr Pepper for the ears" because it will be such a refreshing blend of rich, bold sounds - an instant classic.”
Axl Rose was surprised enough to hear about Dr Pepper's challenge that he decided to release a statement himself. From Guns N Roses:
We are surprised and very happy to have the support of Dr Pepper with our album "Chinese Democracy," as for us, this came totally out of the blue. If there is any involvement with this promotion by our record company or others, we are unaware of such at this time. And as some of Buckethead's performances are on our album, I'll share my Dr Pepper with him.
Great. Now release the farking album Axl. How long more are you making us wait? Argh!
Browsing through the Retro Arcade photoset sure brings back good old memories of me wasting my days away, skipping school and having lots of fun playing games such as Battlezone and Space Invaders in arcades. Visiting arcades nowadays are just not as fun as they used to be. Maybe because now we can play all the good games on our computers, Xbox and PS.

This road in Japan actually plays music! Groves were cut into the road which then create a sound when a car moves across. Judging from the video above, I think I would rather roll up the car's window and blast my own music.

As a working mum, this writer says it is hard for her to find time to get "earth-shattering, toe-curling multiple orgasms". Poor lady. From Onion:
No one tells you when you're young, but having kids just upends your whole life. One minute, you're more than willing to lie on the couch for two or more hours, rubbing massage oil over your breasts and inner thighs until your primed body is aching for that last gentle stroke that will send it over the edge. And then the next minute you have a few children and all of the sudden the only thing that gets you excited is not finding another cavity at the dentist's office. It's all about priorities. And, until the kids go off to good colleges and I save up enough vacation days to make it worthwhile, I guess getting down on all fours in front of the full-length mirror and slowly working my trusty purple vibrator in and out of my dripping love canal with increasing speed and intensity will just have to wait.

I've been noticing a lot of beautiful girls marrying guys who are not that good looking. Is this a trend or what? Now I know why. Psychologists say that happier marriages result from attractive women who wed uglier men. Wait a minute. I thought gorgeous women are only happier with uglier men with big fat wallets. No? From Daily Mail:
The Tennessee team tested 82 newly-wed couples for facial attractiveness and the quality of their marriage.
Their results, in the Journal of Family Psychology, suggested most men who married attractive women were happy to bask in the glory of their partner's beauty.
But Professor Jim McNulty reported: "Men who were more attractive than their partner demonstrated a tendency to offer less emotional and practical support to their wives."
He said "evolutionary perspectives" offered an explanation.
"Attractive men have available to them more short-term mating opportunities.
"This may make them less satisfied and less committed to the marital relationship."

For some strange reasons, I think this business can actually do well here in Singapore. I might even be interested to set up something similar. From MethodIzaz:
MethodIzaz is a unique photography experience. Subjects are unaware of the exact moment they will be photographed and of the photographer's identity. Instead, the subject is photographed completely naturally, living life as normal...
Using information provided earlier about their weekly routine, the photographer will arrive on the scene, and unseen, take shots of the subject. The subject will be photographed walking through the streets, going about their daily business. Without posing and artifice, the camera captures only the natural beauty of the person.

I wondered if the makers of this Finding Nemo wine holder actually got any permission from Walt Disney. I doubt Disney would have approved turning its cute and lovable clown fish cartoon character into an alcoholic, wine drinking fish.

Oh no! The AVA has instructed the importers and retailers of one of my favourite snacks, Nong Shim shrimp crackers, to recall all the products which may have been affected from the market immediately. Why? You won't believe this but a suspected rat's head was found in a bag of the shrimp crackers in Korea. Yup, deep fried some more. From Chosun:
Foodmaker Nongshim will issue a public apology after an object presumed to be a mouse head was found in a packet of the popular shrimp-flavored snack Sae-u-ggang. The company will halt production of the snacks and collect those in the market to destroy them.
According to the Korea Food and Drug Administration, a 24-year-old woman in Cheongwon, North Chungcheong Province, purchased a pack of Sae-u-ggang and found a 1-1.5 cm-object shaped like the head of a mouse. She complained to the foodmaker and demanded compensation. The demand was rejected.
Anyway this is not the first time that Nong Shim is a subject of complaints from consumers. I found out that in Korea, Nong Shim has been caught most often for unsanitary goods. From Korea Times:
The Consumers Union of Korea received 1,980 reports and complaints about the unsafe condition of processed food between August 2007 and January this year. Among them, 1,071, or 54 percent, were foods containing foreign substances, the group said.
Of the cases, 58 were products manufactured by Nongshim, the nation's largest snack maker, the largest among the nation's total distributors and food or beverage makers.
The 58 cases were: 38 involving bugs; eight with unidentified materials; two each with mold, iron fragments, plastic shards and plastic bag pieces; and one each with hair, flies, bone, and staples.
Crikey! No wonder my Nong Shim shrimp crackers taste so damn good every time.

I stumbled upon this collection of Japanese short films with English subtitles on mt37222's Channel on YouTube yesterday. The few that I have watched are very bizarre such as this short film (above) called Takeshi which is about a lady who first met a young boy in her dream when she was 6. Then one day she realises that she was in his dream. I'm confused!
I'm beginning to hate ESPN. Really. Last year, they lost to StarHub in the bid for the exclusive rights to broadcast the English Premier League in Singapore and because of that we had no choice but to watch some crappy Football Channel host and guests in the pre and post match shows. Now ESPN has lost out to SingTel for the rights to broadcast the UEFA Champions League games for the 2009 season and onwards. From Channel NewsAsia:
Singapore Telecommunications Limited (SingTel) has won exclusive rights to broadcast UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup 2009-2012 on its mobile, internet and mio TV platforms.
SingTel also plans to stream UEFA Champions League games both ‘live’ and on-demand on mio TV, and the Internet through the IDEAS portal www.ideas.singtel.com. It will also offer clips on its mobile service.
The first thing I did when I heard the news yesterday was to text my friend who works for ESPN to ask him what's going on. He said SingTel outbid them just like StarHub did for the Premier League. Not again, was my reaction.
StarHub which has been showing UEFA Cup matches did not bid for the combined Champions League and UEFA Cup package. Damn you too StarHub! Why didn't you bid? Now we have to fork out unnecessary money to get SingTel's mio TV's setup box, ADSL modem and subscribe to their sports channel if we want to watch the Champions League in the future. Fark!
I don't know how this could be good for football fans in Singapore. Who the hell would subscribe to mio TV just to catch Champions League? Have you seen the programming on mioTV? They are like crap! And from what I understand, mio TV is only available for residential homes, therefore you won't be able to catch the Champions League games in bars and pubs.

I've just finished watching what must be the greatest Premier League game ever. Check out this scoreline: Spurs 4 - 4 Chelsea! Not as sweet as the League Cup Final when we beat Chelsea 2-1 but this was a cracker of a game with lots of great drama and beautiful goals. Spurs, 3-1 down, came back to end the game 4-4. The Chelsea team and fans were stunned. We could have even won the match in the dying seconds if Cudicini did not spectacularly save Berbatov's goal bound shot.
If you guys missed it live, go catch the highlights or the repeat. I guarantee you that it's one hell of a match. More of such games involving Spurs and I would most likely get a heart attack. Now I should try to get some sleep.
I spotted this on Vicki's Flickr. Check out the guy's name: Kiasu Ong! Now, if there's a contest for the most popular Singaporean name, I think this guy will win hands down.
Vicki told me that she spotted the ad on Business Times. It covers half a page and is full of faces of property agents. Yup, Kiasu Ong sells houses and according to this comment I found on a Tomorrow.sg post, it says he works for Dennis Wee Properties and he is one of their top agents. No wonder. With a name like that, how can he not be a top seller aye.
Update: Thanks to reader Chris Ong (no relations to Kiasu Ong, I think) who wrote to me saying that Kiasu Ong is no longer with Dennis Wee Properties. He is now a Division Head with Anchor Properties. Ah, there he is.

When I first heard this over the radio yesterday, I thought it was some joke but today I came across various news stories that confirm it is indeed true.
A woman was found stuck to the toilet seat. Apparently, she has been seating on the toilet so long that her body became fused to the seat. Yup, wtf! From KTKA (check out the quicktime video of the story too):
When police arrived, they found a 35-year-old woman stuck on the toilet, but she wasn't tied or bound. Instead, police say she had sat on the toilet for what could have been more than a month, causing her muscles and legs to form around the seat. Investigators also believe she hadn't left the bathroom for more than two years...
Because the woman was on the toilet for so long, medics had to break off the toilet seat, which was still attached to the woman, and take her to a hospital.
How could this happen? A skin doctor says it's natural for skin to grow around things. Crikey! From The Body Odd:
“It’s analogous to a couple of things,” says Dr. Daniel Aires, director of the division of dermatology at the University of Kansas Hospital. “One of them would be a splinter. When someone gets a splinter in the skin, the skin grows around it. Another thing that’s similar is an earring or piece of large tribal jewelry, like you see people wearing now. The skin is very happy to grow around things – that’s a natural process.”
Gosh, next time I should be careful not to sit on the toilet for too long. Don't want my ass to become one with the toilet.

Executives who are writing corporate blogs are beginning to find out that maintaining a blog and running a business at the same time is no easy task. From Wichita Business Journal:
"It's far easier to start a blog than to keep one going," said John Dragoon, chief marketing officer at Waltham-based Novell Inc.
"I try to do it consistently but oftentimes I can't do it," conceded Waltham-based Black Duck Software Inc. CEO Doug Levin. "I don't blog for blogging's sake. I blog when I have something to say."
Levin, a self-proclaimed blogophile, said he simply doesn't have the time to blog daily.
"I used to do it every Wednesday, but then I began travelling on Wednesday. Now I will write into my calendar "blogging event?" and I will prepare in advance, taking mental notes or physical notes," he said.
Jena McGregor of Business Week gets some Facebook friend invitations from Singapore and wonders why people add others that they do not know as friends. From Management IQ:
I got two emails today from students in Singapore—not the most common event in my inbox. Both were asking to become my “friends” on Facebook after their professor assigned them a critique of an article I wrote last year on failure. The first one was a welcomed email—I love how the Web puts you in touch with people you’d never otherwise meet—but when I got the one from his classmate, I realized I could suddenly have a lot of friend invitations from Singapore.

esp78 has a couple of old Chinese drama opening titles from the good old SBC Channel 8 days. My favourite has to be The Last Swordsman (clip above). I remember I watched the entire season - and I was hooked to it - thanks to my colleague who passed me her old VHS recordings. I don't know why I love it so much - the captivating storyline or maybe it's the sight of the evil transvestites (led by the Purple Killer) showing off their martial arts skills.
Oh, I found out that MobTV has the entire season online! I wanted to subscribe to their service so that I can watch The Last Swordsman again on my pc but I read that their videos have some stupid DRM so I'm hesitating. But darn, I wanna watch the Purple Killer in action again. Argh!
As promised, here are the unboxing pics of the new LG KS20 that I brought home from the KS20 launch event on Thursday.
First impressions: Love the sleek Prada phone like design of the KS20! It's also light and isn't bulky in size - perfect for someone like me who loves to carry a phone in my hand wherever I go. I am going to put it through its paces over the weekend and will post a review in a couple of days time.
This brand new pair of athletic shoes in a Transformers theme is available for sale on Etsy. I think they are cool and I definitely dig the Autobot and Decepticon logos painted on these shoes but of course, unfortunately they can't transform.
If you like old magazine advertisements, then this gallery has quite a collection for you. It has ads from magazines like Times, Popular Science, Newsweek from 1932 to 1969.

LG launched the KS20, its first Windows Mobile 6 smartphone in Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong yesterday. For its Singapore launch, LG invited several bloggers and forumers at PPCSG to Corduroy Cafe at Vivocity last evening.
The LG KS20 was designed to provide an enriched mobile internet experience in a slim and stylish device. The smartphone features a full complement of multimessaging and multimedia functionality including push email, instant messaging, video calling, FM radio, 2 megapixel camera, WiFi and support for HSDPA (high speed downlink packet access) wireless broadband at speeds of up to 3.2Mbps.
I'll have more photos of the LG KS20 later today but first, here are shots of some of the bloggers at the event!

And lastly, here's a video of one of the LG models (I love her nails!) doing a demo of the LG KS20 to Nadnut and my new best friend, Princess Sabrina (she's the one in red)!
(Thanks LG and Fleishman-Hillard)
Update: Argh! Guys, stop asking me if I have more pics, videos and numbers of the LG models. Really, I don't have! If you want more of their pics and videos, check out Claudia's post and Sheylara's post. Phone numbers, ask LG or their pr firm, Fleishman-Hillard.
Update: I have posted the unboxing of the LG KS20 pics here.

It's very rare that I fall in love with a watch that I see in shops or online but this Icon Watch has managed to win my heart. Does anyone know if I can get it here in Singapore? It's so geeky cool! I want it so badly.

In the US, a war is brewing between supporters of the current US math curriculum and those who prefer Singapore math, which has already shown amazing results at a school in Hollywood. After using math textbooks developed for use in Singapore, Ramona Elementary School's math scores soared. From LA Times:
Ramona, which received a grant to introduce the Singapore curriculum, is one of a sprinkling of schools around the country to do so.
Not all teachers like it, and not all use it. The Singapore books aren't easy for teachers to use without training, and some veterans are more comfortable with the curriculum they have always followed. But you can tell when you walk into a classroom using Singapore math.
"On your mark . . . get set . . . THINK!"
First-grade teacher Arpie Liparian stands in front of her class with a stopwatch. The only sound is of pencils scratching paper as the students race through the daily "sprint," a 60-second drill that is a key part of the Singapore system. The problems at this age are simple: 2+3, 3+4, 8+2. The idea, once commonplace in math classrooms, is to practice them until they become second nature.
Critics call this "drill and kill," but Ramona's math coach, Robin Ramos, calls it "drill and thrill." The children act as though it's a game. Not everyone finishes all 30 problems in 60 seconds, and only one girl gets all the answers right, but the students are bubbling with excitement.
The Homeroom, a blog by the LA Times has more comments. Here's one of them:
What intrigued me most about your story is that there is nothing new about Singapore Math and its use in American education. The style and concepts put forward in the books are the same I was taught more than forty-five years ago when I entered school. Drills, memorizing multiplication tables, 'speed tests', etc were all part of the normal routine for me and my classmates. When I reached third grade, my parents put me in a small Catholic school in suburban Philadelphia where the same curriculum was taught. I was introduced to set theory and number theory in those early years as a matter of course with every expectation that I was capable of learning them.... So I was given a foundation in both 'pure' and 'applied' mathematics very early and that served me well when I returned to school decades later to get my degree in mathematics. Standardized tests in mathematics in this country are a joke. I have graded them, and was appalled at the lack of understanding on even fundamentals the test authors had. If the writers of these tests don't understand basic math, it should come as no wonder that teachers in the primary, elementary and middle school grades do not. Many of these teachers are as math-phobic as their students, and are barely one step ahead of them in comprehension. It is no surprise that American math students do so poorly and hate math so much.... So while I am glad to see Singapore Math being promoted, I am disillusioned at the same time. This is a rediscovery, not something novel, for American math education. And as far as I'm concerned, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the NCTM, has done more to damage math education in this country than any other organization.
Dude used 69 thousand images from all six of the Star Wars movies (or about 1 in every 20 frames in the entire series) and spent two weeks on his computer to make this huge mosaic of the Star Wars Last Supper that is roughly the length of a table! And for around US$100, he may even make one for you.
Crayon Physics Deluxe looks like a really cool 2D physics puzzle game, in which you get to experience what it would be like if your drawings magically transformed into real physical objects. The objective of the game is to solve puzzles with your artistic vision and creative use of physics. The video of the game in action left me completely mesmerised.
Every Jedi master must have one of these Star Wars inspired teneguis, which are thin Japanese hand towels made of cotton. A Bangladeshi who came to Singapore to seek medical treatment for his diseased leg, got a major shock when cops swarmed his flat thinking that he is Mas Selamat. Do check out his pic! Love the pose. From ST:
Mohamad Iqbal Hussain, 28, was limping to a canteen near a shopping mall in the city-state when an alert individual called police, according to The New Paper.
The reason: Mas Selamat bin Kastari, the alleged Singapore head of JI, also has a limp - and is still in hiding after escaping from detention more than a week ago.
Police cars duly swooped on the housing bloc where Mr Iqbal has been staying with a friend, and officers carried out a house-to-house search.
They left after briefly interviewing him, the newspaper added.
It turned out that Mr Iqbal, who works as a clerk in Dhaka, is in Singapore to seek medical treatment for a disease affecting his right leg and which causes him to walk with a limp.
'I was unwaware of what was happening,' he was quoted as saying.
Alert individual my ass. How can he not tell the difference?! The poor Bangla dude doesn't even resemble Mas Selamat! Anyway, guys next time if you see any limping man who you think is Mas Selamat, please make sure you get closer to him to see if he really looks like the JI leader before you call the cops lah. Singapore is already getting so much bad press about Mas Selamat's escape. The last thing we need now is to piss off tourists who are visiting our country just because they have a limping leg.
Raymond Castile, a newspaper reporter is the curator of The Gallery of Monster Toys. He wrote on his website: "Vintage monster toys are typically overlooked by collectors, largely because they seem obsolete in today's world. The toys in this gallery are not, for the most part, "slick" or "hyper-detailed." They are humble and imperfect. They depict flawed, tortured creatures. These toys capture a time when horror was fun. A time when monsters seemed like "big brothers" to their young fans."
Jana created a pillow from one of her son's t-shirts and she teaches us how. Really neat! I have lots of old t-shirts that I do not throw away for one reason or another. It would be great to use them and make me some new pillows. Now if only I'm good with the sewing machine.

Monks in Thailand are becoming more high tech nowadays. They are using popular social networking websites to woo women. Thai officials are not too happy. From Reuters:
"I call on Hi5 users to tell the monks to leave the site if they are found using it," junior minister Jakrapob Penkair told reporters after a Buddhist monitoring group said some monks were flirting on the Web site popular with Thai users...
A senior Culture Ministry official said monks should not be banned from the cyberspace, but should turn this "crisis" into "opportunity" by bringing Buddha's teaching to the young.
"Instead of using the Net to flirt with young girls, monks should find ways to preach Dharma and lead them in the right direction," said Ladda Thangsupachai, head of the Cultural Surveillance Centre.
Looking at these incredible macro shots of praying mantises reminds me of a quote made by Mulder in an episode of The X-Files : "Yeah, I had a praying mantis epiphany and, as a result, I screamed. Not... not a girly scream but the scream of someone being confronted by some before unknown monster that had no right existing on the same planet I inhabited. Did you ever notice how a praying mantis' head resembles an alien's head? The mysteries of the natural world were revealed to me that day but instead of being astounded I was repulsed."

Australian researchers reveal that blogging boosts your social life by helping you feel less isolated, more connected to a community and more satisfied with your friendships, both online and face-to-face. From ABC:

All respondents, whether or not they blogged, reported feeling less anxious, depressed and stressed after two months of online social networking.

This balloon sculpture of a German Panther tank looks like a really fun project. As you can see from the pics, even the kids are having lots of fun - especially when it comes to destroying it. Also, check out the cool helicopter lighting hanging from the ceiling.
Only in Japan will you see a popular bikini idol wearing a low-cut bee costume, promote an animated film meant for kids. Dang! I would go catch the Bee Movie if they had done this roadshow here in Singapore. Too bad.
Dude wanted a quiet, small and low power consumption computer to function as a basic home server so he made one himself using an empty whisky bottle! Now you know what to do with those empty bottles lying around your house aye.
Did this earlier today. Do you think you have got what it takes to find escaped JI leader Mas Selamat? First, study all his disguise pics in an earlier post here and then locate him in this picture full of our fellow Singaporeans. There are 12 Mas Selamat to be found. Here's a slightly bigger pic if this is too small and for the answers just head to the pic's Flickr page and move your mouse over the pic. Happy searching!
On Saturday, the National Museum of Singapore held an open-air screening of Jason and the Argonauts. The 1963 film tells the story of Jason, who in order to make his rightful claim to the kingdom of Thessaly, must travel to the faraway land of Colchis to obtain the magical Golden Fleece that has powers to bring peace and prosperity to his troubled land. He assembles a crew of the greatest athletes in Greece including Hercules for his voyage and with the help of Argos, builds a ship to sail to the ends of the world.
I have heard about Jason and the Argonauts before but this was my first time watching it. The film is one of the great achievements of 20th century motion picture special effects and I can see why. The stop motion work used in the film was a joy to watch especially the climatic battle scene with the army of skeletons. It's amazing that a film way back in 1963 can achieve such special effects.
I really enjoyed watching it and more so since it was my first time at the National Museum's Open-Air Screening. Watching such a classic movie under the night sky with the majestic building of the museum just next to me was a memorable experience.
Everyone in Singapore is taking part in the Great Singapore Search for the escaped JI leader Mas Selamat. Even the telcos are getting on the act by sending out free MMS messages with his photo to mobile phone users here.
The folks at TalkingCock.com are also doing their part. You can download their free handy print out that you can keep inside your wallet to help you spot Mas Selamat in one of his many disguises.
And if that's not enough to help you out, here's another set of possible disguise pictures. Happy searching! Oh wait, that photo of him with that blonde wig looks so familiar. Now where have I seen that person before? Hmmm.
Interesting comparison between the Marvel Comics adaption of the classic Star Wars trilogy and the Japanese manga version. The manga ones kick ass big time man! Now I really would like to see the Japanese do a Star Wars animated series using manga-style artwork. That would be awesome!
I wish we have a Mario themed bar like this one here in Singapore. Some folks from the IT University of Copenhagen pooled their vast knowledge of mixing and alcohols to craft ten unique Mario-theme drinks. They got some pretty looking cocktails there but since I'm a shots kinda guy, I would settle for their Big Mario and Luigi shots. Got vodka power-up some more!
These framed Famicom Disk System posters from Japan make a great addition to your wall if you are a video game geek like me. They aren't that large - only 11.75 x 8.5 cm, but they sure are a collector's item.
Dr Monkey scans an old Radio Shack special edition Whiz Kids comic book and calls it the worst comic book ever. In the comic, the Whiz Kids with the help of a computer foils a kidnap attempt. I like that they even have a Student's Guide to Computer Language on the last page.
Wanna create your own signature flavoured vodka? Here's how you can add some flavour to your vodka through a process known as maceration. I wanna try this! Anything with liquor sounds like a great project to me. From Wired:
Once you've added the desired amount of fruit, start dousing it with the desired amount of vodka. The goal is to make sure that your produce is covered (if not submerged) in vodka. Don't mind any floaters -- they're normal. Also keep in mind that the ratio of vodka to produce has a direct effect on flavor, so pour accordingly. When you've poured in the desired amount (or filled the jar), throw on the lid and make sure it's sealed tightly. Place the jar in the refrigerator, or in a cool, dark place. Direct sunlight can wreak all sorts of havoc, so keep it away from the sun at all costs.
