Newton stall charges $30 for 1 prawn, American tourists unhappy
American tourists Mike Rigby, his wife and four friends were shocked when the bill came after their meal at Newton Food Centre. They had to pay nearly $500 for prawns, crabs, baby squid, beer, rice and buns. That's $30 for a prawn!
Back in 2007, I had a meal there and we had to pay $20 for a prawn. Imagine the shock on my face. 20 bucks for a farkin prawn?! Oh well, it looks like daylight robbery still occurs in Newton Food Centre. betshopboy says it best when he replied to me on Twitter. Thanks to him now I know prawns also got inflation. Damn those seafood sellers at Newton! Damn them!
Update (from my Twitter): Ah those bastards selling the $30 prawns are at this Newton stall, 43 Tanglin Best Seafood. Best my ass!
Stall No 43 at Newton Hawker Centre has been suspended. About time!

So dude did you still go to Newton to have your prawns? :op
The government should do something about it. This has been happening for many years and no one is taking action against these unscrupulous food sellers.
my dad once said that he prefers to sell prawns at newton.
Shouldn't it be "two years later" instead of three? betshopboy must have had too much prawn. lol.
aiyoh... stay away from that place already
I like that the reporter actually seek an expert on prawns:
The newspaper sought the views of an industry expert who said tiger prawns usually cost $6 to $6.50 for 100g at restaurants.
"An average-sized prawn is about 50g while a large one weighs 100g," he said.
"I reckon eight large tiger prawns would cost not more than $52," he added.
another two years it will be $40 per prawn.
To American tourists Mike Rigby, his wife and four friends,
WELCOME TO SINGAPORE!!!!
Hope you enjoyed your stay and those prawns.
Mr Big: Never ever! Even if god forbid, Newton is the only place on Earth that sells prawns.
No wonder all those uncles drive Mercedes.
the place there like some mafia owned... scary.... if u disagree with them... they will come out n beat u.
recession in sg but those stall owners still making money!
there should be mandatory price list for all the food there and that the stalls must tell how much the food cost to the customer before cooking it.
I shall skip Newton Food Centre in my future trip to Singapore then.
I pity those tourists, they lodged a complain with STB but was directed to NEA.
WELCOME TO SINGAPORE!!!!
Crazy... like that I rather eat shark fin...
Betshopboy said, "I pity those tourists, they lodged a complain with STB but was directed to NEA."
Because NEA is in charge of hawkers and their licensing. This is out of STB's jurisdiction. At most STB can do is to put up posters warning tourist to be careful, they can't issue penalty to the stall owners. Simple as that.
