Yanny is the fifth and the last pick for my Noise Singapore 2009 Artist of the Day series of blog posts, joining Random Sunday, Zhou, Hafi and Lee Shuxian, all featured in my blog this week.
Yanny has been drawing since she was young, starting with her living room walls, doodling little crude sketches of a charred Little Mermaid, stickmen family portraits with curly hair, houses that grew legs and reliving her fantasy of Snoopy being her pet dog on paper.
She like comics especially, ever since rummaging through her brother's old stack of Bookworm comics. For a period of time all she did was stay at home and draw comics of little kid gangs and their adventures all day long and showing them to her buddies on weekends.
Art to her that time was something she considered as a hobby, something that she does to make up for a lack of a social life until polytechnic education year one, when her graphic design teacher said she should try her luck and submit some of her works to Noise Singapore. She says, "I never thought of really showing my drawings to other people because I kept thinking they'd never be good enough. But nevertheless, I figure maybe I might get something out of it. Since then a lot of things happened, my works were given media attention, but my art being selected by NAC and exhibited at Toyko was my proudest moment."
Yanny hopes to be a book illustrator one day or maybe a comic book artist. You can view her work here and here.
