Singapore ministers get million dollar pay hike

It sure pays well to be a minister in Singapore. The government has announced salary hikes for its ministers and top civil servants. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will earn $3.1 million this year after the revision. He took home $2.5 million last year. President SR Nathan who used to get $2.5 million, will now take home $3.2 million dollars. Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong and Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Kwan Yew will now be paid $3.04 million each. Both earned $2.7 million each last year.

Compare the above salaries with what leaders in other countries are earning and you will see why our ministers are smiling all the way to the bank. For example, PM Lee's revised salary will be more than three times that of U.S. President George W. Bush and about four times that of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan.

Why do our ministers need to be paid so high? MM Lee said that Singapore would suffer if the government could not pay competitive salaries. He added that our security will be at risk and our women will become maids in other people's countries.

They should not be paid so highly. People who lead the country should not be motivated by money.
