9 year old Singapore girl pregnant

A primary school girl in Singapore aged 9, experimented with sex with a 14 years old schoolboy at home when her parents were away at work and got herself pregnant. This makes her the youngest girl in Singapore to get pregnant and again highlights the concern of teen pregnancy. From AsiaOne:
Ministry of Health figures for 2001 to 2005 show an average of around 1,500 teen abortions every year. In 2005, the exact figure was 1,279 and in 2004, the number was 1,341.

Nearly all the teens who aborted their babies in 2005 were between 15 and 19 years old and unmarried. Slightly more than half were Chinese and a third were Malay.

The figures go to the heart of a controversy over the issue of how early children should be exposed to sex education in schools.

Ms Jebal cited the example of the pregnant nine-year-old during a youth forum to counter the complaints of one participant, who felt her sister in Primary 4 was too young to start learning about sex...

Recounting the tense one-hour discussion she had with the family to The Straits Times, Ms Jebal said: 'Her parents taught her how to use a sanitary napkin, but didn't educate her about menstruation or sex.

'They felt she was too young to know at her age. There is no such thing as being too young to know,' said Ms Jebal.

Ms Tan Bee Joo of the Singapore Children's Society cited several areas of concern, including lack of adult supervision over the use of the Internet, where teens can easily access pornographic sites and 'meet' strangers online.

With or without sex education, kids nowadays will always try out sex.

Interesting stats here -

"Slightly more than half were Chinese and a third were Malay."

I expected more to be Malays.

But how young should we start kids with sexual education? I guess in this case as early as 9 years old? I think there are enough laws in Singapore that will punish a guy who has sex with an underage girl. We will still see cases but I do not think this is on the rise.

some people are really dependant, how stupid can she be to get her self pregnant, and yet at the age of NINE!

I mean, think about the baby, how ashamed will it be to grow up to know that my mummy had sex when she was 9 years old with a 14 yr old boy. :O

sex ed is bad, cause before sex ed i swear i never knew sex existed. Its only because of sex ed that i realsie theres such a thing, making me curious in the first place. If you never tell kids about sex, they wouldnt know it exists. Isnt that better?

LAW WONT HELP.

and sex education for small kids is not a right way. there is right age for everything.

Education is nothing but Exposing to that particular subject.

So the best way is, till certain age.. do not allow kids to get exposed to the few things like sex, crime, death, surgery, etc..

T.V plays very important role. Now a days TV broad cast more than what required. ( Some time just write Parental guidance) which is of no use.

TV avoid, Sexy behaviors shows, sex discussion shows, sexually provoking costumes shows etc.

For such telecast make special arrangement with secured special channels.

All open TV channels should telecast, kids, elderly people and family together watching programs.

peeple get pregnant to young. personally i think its the parents fault. me and my brothers never tokk about sex, but my step-sister has a stripper whore for a mom. shes ten and shes already french-kissed other kids, and she has shown boys in her class wut her privates look like. if a child gets pregnant, it is most likey because the parents are very sexuality and/or encourage it.

you people are being incredible close-minded and conservative. Turning a blind-eye to the situation and adopting an "ignorance is bliss" attitude is not going to alter reality. if a child gets pregnant or gets another child pregnant because his/her parents never educated their child about sex, then the parents are responsible for the matter, for their child was clearly unaware of the risks and consequences involved. shit happens. being safe rather than sorry is undoubtedly wiser. why should you turn a blind eye and just assume that this cannot happen to your child?
