Death by MRT: A List

It seems there was another man hit by a MRT train again today as reported by some forumers at Hardware Zone and Sammyboy. So far, no official word from the media (See update below).

Recently, MRT suicides have been the talk of the town after videos of two men committing suicide at two train stations were leaked out. I found out that there have been 15 accidents involving trains hitting people since 2002. Most of them are suicides. Here's a list.

A man was killed when he was hit by an MRT train near Marsiling station at about 11.40pm on Nov 30 2002. The Malaysian was walking along the MRT tracks when he was hit by a northbound train about 500 m from the station.

A 25 year old Chinese female teacher was run over by a train at Ang Mo Kio MRT station shortly before 7pm on 11 Jan 2003 after she got too near the platform after being too engrossed in the book that she was reading.

A 31 year old Chinese man, a resident of Kim Keat, was found trapped under a train and died after falling on the track in front of an oncoming train at Bishan MRT station at about 1pm on Jul 28 2004.

A SAF Warrant Officer fell onto the tracks at Bukit Batok MRT station at about 1.50pm on 14 August 2004 and was hit by a train heading to Jurong East. His toes were crushed and he also suffered cuts to his head and body, but he survived and was warded at the National University Hospital.

On 31 August 2004, a lady in her 40s was hit by a train after she fell on to the tracks at Redhill MRT station. She suffered head injuries and was sent to the Singapore General Hospital.

On 31 August 2004, at about 1.50pm, a Chinese lady fell off the Bukit Batok MRT platform and was hit by an oncoming train heading to Jurong East. She suffered multiple fractures and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 74-year-old man, who was a resident of Toa Payoh died when he fell and was hit by an oncoming northbound train at Bishan MRT station in the afternoon of Sep 15 2004.

On 25 March 2005, a Malay man was killed by a train in the direction of Pasir Ris as he went down the tracks at Buona Vista MRT station to retrieve his shoe.

On 28 December 2005, a thirty-two-year-old Indian man died within minutes after he accidentally slipped onto the tracks at Kallang MRT station and was subsequently hit by an oncoming west-bound train.

On September 17, 2006, a lady was pushed down off the platform on to the tracks at Clementi MRT station and was slightly injured, an oncoming train having almost hit her. She saw the train coming towards her and had managed to climb over towards the side of the tracks (opposite the station platform). A man who was suspected of pushing her onto the tracks was arrested by police after passers-by pinned him to the ground as he tried to escape.

In the evening of 18 October 2006, a Chinese man was killed at the Chinese Garden MRT station after being hit by a train going towards Boon Lay. The victim was suspected of committing suicide, aggravated by poverty.

On October 30 2006, a man was killed by a westbound train at Clementi station and died on the spot. The police have described the death as an unnatural death and are investigating the matter.

At around 2:08 p.m. of 2 December 2006, a man was hit by a southbound train at Admiralty MRT station. He was pronounced dead later, at around 2:40 p.m.

On the early morning of Dec 5 2006, a foreign worker in his early twenties, was hit by a southbound train at the Yishun MRT station. He was later pronounced dead.

And on Jan 23 2007, a man was knocked down by a eastbound train at Eunos MRT station.

SMRT has so far refused to build platform screen doors in all their above ground stations saying that it costs too much money. I can confidently say that if they had built these platform doors, none of the above accidents and deaths would happen. Yes, the suicidal people will still end up dead one way or another but at least, not on the MRT tracks.

Update: It's confirmed. Media reports say that a Chinese woman in her 50s was hit by a train at Woodlands Station at 3.20pm today. She has been sent to National University Hospital after complaining of pain in her right thigh.

Why are there no accidents in the underground stations?

Because they have platform doors.

What happened to her? Did she survive? Poor lady.

The lady at Woodlands mrt today - did she jump or fell?

mrt will never build the platform doors. they will rather spend the money on expensive, useless video monitoring system.

She fell down. Today one not suicide.

iz: can't the government also help to fund some of the costs to install the doors?

if it was a suicide today, then better that she die than survive or else she will be charged.

Maybe floor wet because of rain. She slipped and fell down the track while train coming.

they earn so much whenever someones buys a pack of cigarette, why dont they just spare alil of their "earnings" to build the platform doors ?

SMRT must do something about this. They can't prevent people who want to kill themselves but they can prevent people from using their tracks to do so by putting the barriers. The prove is there- underground stations are all free from track accidents.

so many deaths

:o(

with the free rides and clearing of the mangled mess they might soon be considering putting up some platform doors. When it hurts their pockets they will come out with a solution.

Let's put it this way. If SMRT were to build platform doors on elevated stations, the costs involved in building these will be passed onto consumers. This means we'll need to pay more to ride the train. And we'll definitely complain when the transport cost rises. Singaporeans never stop complaining huh?

Very disturbing! Imagine the station becoming haunted! If it wasn't suicide and if it was an accident, the MRT security is very very poor. They need to do something about it ASAP and prevent deaths tolling up there.
